Gilbert always was a little peevish -- bothered by this and that -- and now he's dying. Well, at least Gilbert -- Lord Hadley -- believes he is dying. He was cursed, you see, by that angry Holy Man in India, in 1882. The old Sadhu condemned poor Gilbert to suffer hellish sicknesses -- torments of body and mind -- for four years and then, in the last year, to die in his agony. It is 1909, and for the past four Christmases Gilbert has suffered those vary afflictions and with increasing intensity. And now, the curse is once more upon him. Perhaps too late, he calls upon Gerard de Montclaire to sort curse from crime, cruelty from cowardice, in one of the great French detective's most challenging investigations. In the end, Montclaire and his associate, Colonel Sir Francis FitzMaurice, will discover unspeakable murders and an insatiable appetite for revenge. But, he and Fitz must work fast. After all, this is The Fifth Christmas.

I liked it and I didn't like it. The author is good at writing insofar as he can plot a story fairly well and make a decent brief mystery that reads quickly and still has a bit of a punch. The sad part that costs him some stars in my book is that, in what I presume is an effort to make this a quick read, he has his detective find things out off-screen. You can't really predict whodunnit--which is half the fun of reading mysteries for me--because you don't have all the information. In the denouement the detective says things like "what I found out in those telegrams you saw me send was [insert information]." Well, thanks for letting us know eventually, guy! That helps!Really, though, since it only took like an hour and a half to read this--it's very short--I can't fault it overmuch. It's not like I was spending enough time on it to do much pondering anyway. And it was a good thing to read in the hustle and bustle of the holidays when you just want to chill for awhile but not get overcommitted to a story.

The Fifth Christmas An Edwardian Christmas Mystery Montclaire Christmas Mystery Book 1 edition by E A Allen Children eBooks Reviews
This was totally English and I enjoyed it very much. Surprisingly the information regarding the author was interesting. I like his thought process.
I loved this novelette. It was fast paced and not a lot of unnecessary description. Most of the story was told through dialogue. There was a twist at then end. Quick fun read
